September 25th marks the eight year anniversary of the Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As such, I wanted to take the opportunity to reflect on Strathmore’s contribution to this global initiative. Tackling the escalating crisis of food insecurity requires bold, innovative solutions that unite communities across all sectors.
Strathmore has collaborated with many clients, including Cominar and Colliers and Loto-Québec to transform ornamental gardens into working vegetable gardens. Over 30 tonnes of fresh produce has gone directly to Moisson Montréal, Moisson Laval (CBML) and other organizations supporting families in need. What started as a vision has become a thriving community resource.
Food insecurity is not a distant problem—it’s a pressing issue right here in Canada, where, according to Statistics Canada, nearly twenty three percent of Canadians now rely on food banks every month.
In cities where food insecurity is on the rise, Strathmore and our clients have stepped up with a unique initiative. A bountiful vegetable garden not only adds beauty to commercial grounds, but also feeds the community, local restaurants, and even employees who enjoy a healthy snack during lunch breaks.
By integrating sustainability and community care into their garden, Strathmore and our clients are contributing to “Zero Hunger”, one of the United Nations SDGs, ensuring access to fresh, nutritious food for all.
